THINGS YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT GOLD BUT SHOULD
The international price or market price you see in the paper, hear about on the radio or see online is based on one ounce (troy) of fine gold. First, what do I mean by troy ounce. You may or may not be aware that there are two common weight systems currently in use in the world today(there are others but these are the most common) . The one most people are familiar with is called avoirdupois and is used to weigh fruits and vegetables at the grocery store, ourselves on our bathroom scale etc. The system used for precious metals is the Troy system. The simple difference is as follow: 1 ounce avoirdupois=28.349gms. 1 ounce troy=31.103gms. What that means is you need a scale that weighs in troy ounces to price gold properly. All of our scales are certified and weigh in troy ounces. Next why don’t you get the gold market price for an ounce of your gold jewelry? Jewelry is made out of karat gold, not pure or fine gold.
WHAT IS KARAT GOLD?
Karat gold is a mixture of fine or pure gold and generally copper and silver. The copper and silver (nickel in the case of white gold) is added to the pure gold to give it physical and visual properties. This mixture is made using different percentages of fine gold and these different percentages are referred to as 8, 9, 10, 12, 14 , 18, and 22 karat gold.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT PERCENTAGE OF MY JEWELRY IS GOLD?
That is easy! Simply make the fraction your karat/24.
Example; 18kt/24kt=3/4 or in percentage 75%. Following this example: 18kt=75%, 14kt=58%, 10kt=41%.
